In 1990, a survey of the structure and working arrangements of 12 urban, hospice-based home care teams in the UK was carried out. The main areas of interest were staff numbers and training, visiting patterns for assessment and follow-up, workload including out-of-hours cover, and relationships with primary care teams. The role of home care services and two possible models, participatory and advisory, for provision of such services are presented and discussed.
