Hemiplegic shoulder pain is a common problem and in many cases is due to subluxation. Existing treatments are often unsatisfactory. The Functional Shoulder Orthosis has been reported to be effective in this condition and we sought to reproduce the results of the originator of the orthosis. We had a great deal of difficulty in identifying patients who satisfied the selection criteria. The patients we studied found it cumbersome, and it offered little advantage over a sling. We cannot recommend this orthosis for widespread use.
