Abstract
Aim:
To explain the mechanism of action of external compression in venous/valvular incompetence
Design:
Prospective investigation in single patient group.
Setting:
Notre Dame de Bon Secours Hospital, Paris, France.
Patients:
Four patients presenting with primary varicosities undergoing surgical treatment.
Interventions:
Dynamic saphenous vein angioscopy with application of external compression to the limb.
Main outcome measures:
Angioscopy assessment of venous valvular incompetence.
Results:
External compression failed to abolish reflux in valves where there was an intercorneal space at the valve commissure.
