Injection of distal varicose veins is widely practised, but sapheno-femoral incompetence is commonly treated by operative ligation. In a double-blind prospective trial, 44 limbs in 22 patients underwent bilateral high saphenous injection using STD and saline. The initial results are promising. The proximal segment of the long saphenous vein was occluded in 63.3% of limbs and both saline and STD can produce occlusion. This may be a quick safe and reliable alternative to surgery.
