Abstract
Acute and chronic venous insufficiency of the lower extremities in infancy and childhood is a rare event which, nevertheless must be taken seriously.
The therapeutic and diagnostic necessity of catheterization dominates as a cause. Postoperative, post-traumatic and postinfection thrombophlebitis are further causes in elder children. Others are much less frequent.
The most common localizations of the thrombi are the thigh and pelvic veins.
The high rate of clinically relevant pulmonary embolism and chronic venous insufficiency after deep thrombophlebitis emphasizes the importance of proper diagnosis and therapy.
