Abstract

As part of the Routledge collection of Research in Cultural and Media Studies, in Celebrity Bromances: Constructing, Interpreting and Utilising Personas Celia Lam and Jackie Raphael consider the significance of the bromance in contemporary popular culture and celebrity culture. They do this through using case studies that explore ‘construction, roles and uses of celebrity bromances in contemporary popular and celebrity culture’ (p. 16). Within the volume, they mark out the history of bromances and on and off-screen representations of bromances by exploring sincerity and authenticity (chapter 2), personal agency in regards to celebrities and the relationship between celebrity, media and fandom (chapter 3), the utilisation of bromances in contemporary media, including commodification and advertisement (chapter 4), and bromance to comradery capital and the involvement of women within the term ‘bromance’ in chapter 5. Case studies of celebrity bromances are intertwined throughout each chapter and the conclusion provides a useful summary and suggestions for further research. The volume is well suited for scholars and students interested in cultural, communications, film and television studies.
