Abstract
This article attempts to broaden the discussion of the World Wide Web, by looking at the phenomenon of web journalism and globalization theories from a non-Anglo-American viewpoint. The hypothesis is put forth that the global web-media will mainly be used as local tools. This argument is backed up by two surveys. A survey of 126 news-sites from 19 countries dilutes the myth that English is considered by all to be the standard web language. The backbone of the article's argument is, however, to be found in the results of a survey carried out on an Icelandic news-site, which support the present hypothesis, that web-media will mainly be used locally and that the global distribution of web-media will predominantly be exploited by expatriates, tourists and niche publications.
