Thermal spray coatings: For industrial and biomedical applications

Abstract

Thermal spray coatings offer novel approaches for prevalent problems in numerous sectors. The ability of the thermal spray process to deposit numerous materials without changing or altering the internal properties make them ideal for various applications. Different coating techniques have been developed over the years such as atmospheric plasma spraying (APS), cold gas spray (CGS) and vacuum plasma spray (VPS) which are utilized in numerous applications for enhancing or restoring the material and mechanical qualities of specific components. Globally these techniques have been successfully utilized for several applications. This article examines the applications of thermal spray coatings for some major areas including automotive, aircraft, biomedical and power generation industries to address issues such as corrosion and heat loss. Thermal spray coating in the gas turbine sector improves component life, mechanical characteristics, and thermal effectiveness by insulating engines. Biomedical applications assist patients prevent adverse responses to orthopaedic implants. Thermal spray coating waste packages and canisters may maintain nuclear criticality during shipment, degradation, and disposal. It also reduces friction and wear, increasing component life in harsh conditions. The review paper outlines the advantages and disadvantages of the different coating techniques and hence depending upon the required characteristics a suitable method can be adopted accordingly.
