Abstract
An appraisal of library services provided to Open University students in Sri Lanka is examined against the background to the social demand for higher education and a historical account of distance education. Stages in the development of the library services at the Open University of Sri Lanka are traced and critically examined. The need to take into account the distance mode of education and information technology developments and to plan for a virtual library situation in the future is advocated as the best possible way to meet distance user information needs in the future.
