Monitoring: a tool for improving national water supply and sanitation sector planning and management

Abstract

An obstacle to effective planning and management in the water and sanitation sector has been the lack of information on the status of water and sanitation services at the national level. The Joint Monitoring Programme of the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund aims to overcome this problem by helping countries to begin monitoring using a limited number of key indicators.
