Reviews recent attempts to survey and coordinate the United Kingdom library and information resource in order to obtain more overseas contracts for the supply of library and information skills and services. A meeting of key players held in Canterbury, Kent, in February 1991 initiated "the Canterbury process', which studied the willingness of British library and information professionals to become involved in overseas work, and the advantages and disadvantages of doing so. Further surveys and meetings led to the formation of a pilot Opportunities in Europe Group, to encourage the exploitation of European opportunities for the United Kingdom library and information services sector.
