The need for coordination of national
information documentation in Nigeria has been
recognized and extensively discussed among
librarians and information professionals
throughout the country for over two decades.
However, there is a need to avoid duplication
and wastage of essential resources by
establishing a National Information
Documentation Centre (NIDOC) that would
complement the effort of the National Library by
emphasizing areas of greater national need in its
coverage. Relevant functions of the National
Library are examined and weaknesses in
achieving set objectives identified. It is
recommended that the proposed NIDOC be
initially located at the National Library to utilize
its three decades of experience in national
documentation.
