Evaluates the Unesco programmes in
communication, information and informatics, as
perceived by the Unesco General Conference at
its 26th session, assessing the newly-created
Sector of Communication, Information and
Informatics and the issue of cooperation versus
integration of the three programmes. The
problems of articulating the Intergovernmental
Informatics Programme (IIP) with the General
Information Programme (PGI) are discussed.
Particular attention is paid to PGI in respect of:
the disappearance of scientific and technical
information as a visible entity of the programme;
the weakening of the archives component of the
programme; the implications of the new
transverse function of PGI; and the lack of
adequate financing.
