The expansion of education in Sri Lanka after
independence gave rise to a demand for libraries
and library education. Describes early efforts to
provide library education in Sri Lanka and
existing facilities, including those provided by
the Sri Lanka Library Association, the
Department of Library Science at Kelaniya
University, and the Sri Lanka National Library
Services Board. The need for coordination of
library education programmes, adequate
manpower surveys and library legislation is
stressed. Proposals for the future development
of library education in Sri Lanka are outlined.
Concludes that there is an urgent need for a
comprehensive statement of national policy and
objectives for library education.
