Edited version of a paper presented at the 12th
Southern African Universities Social Science
Conference (SAUSSC) held in Gaborone,
Botswana, 3 to 7 July, 1989. Examines the
Southern African Interlibrary Lending System,
based at the State Library in Pretoria, Republic
of South Africa, from the Botswana point of
view. Focuses on two of the seven Botswana
members of the system: the University of
Botswana and the Botswana National Library
Service. The historical development of the
system is traced as a background to the analysis.
Raw data from the files of both institutions are
analyses and the current manner of operation
examined. In conclusion the paper, through an
Index of Relative Utilization, attempts to answer
the question of cooperation or dependency.
