Reviews library development in Ethiopia since the revolution. Whereas the negative aspects of the revolution are well-known, its achievements are not recorded in the Western media. Impressive developments in education have resulted in a surge of demand for reading matter at all levels, and it is suggested that, despite government efforts, there is a book famine in Ethiopia. Under these conditions, libraries have particularly heavy responsibilities. Provides an overview of the development of the National Library, academic, school, public and special libraries, including the provision of library materials, technical operations, library services, library publications, library staffing and education, and library buildings, since the revolution.
