Briefly describes Unesco's concern with information matters; the creation of the General Information Programme, PGI, and its evolution through the first and second Medium-Term Plans; the integration within PGI of the information, library and archives components ; the changes in emphasis to respond to evolving needs; the present challenges it has to face and the way it adjusts to the budgetary limitations.
