Abstract
Investigations into library services in Zimbabwe before independence in 1980 were reviewed during a subsequent feasibility study which recommended the creation of an integrated national library service. Legislation to establish the service was enacted in 1985, but its development has been hampered by lack of funds. A school of library and information science, offering a three-year diploma, has been established at the Harare Polytechnic. Staff training and financial support are the main problems facing the service in the future.
