Abstract
Sri Lanka, like many other Third World countries, has been hampered in its development programmes due to inadequate provision of scientific and technical information. The main areas and priorities for research and development and the scientific and technological infrastructure in Sri Lanka are described. On the basis of a Unesco feasibility study (1968), the Sri Lanka Scientific and Technical Information Centre (SLSTIC) was established with UNDP aid within the National Science Council of Sri Lanka (now the Natural Resources, Energy and Science Authority). A brief history of the Centre and its main objectives are outlined. The present functional activities of SLSTIC including its services and facilities and national, regional and international cooperative programmes are described, as well as the general library, information and documentation situation in Sri Lanka. Issues and problems in providing information services are analysed and some possible solutions to improve the current situation are suggested.
