Portuguese Government preparations for entry to the EEC in 1986 ignore the information sector, which is very underdeveloped in comparison with most other European countries. Total investment in the computer sector in 1981 was only 0.35 percent of the national budget. A recent survey of public libraries revealed their condition to be very bad. A directory of specialized documentation and information services is soon to be published and a survey of university libraries is being carried out. Examples of recent computer applications in library and information services, including the national industrial database, INFOLNETI, are described and questions of access to international databases are discussed. The work of official bodies in the information sector and recent developments in training in information studies are described.
