The Austro-Yugoslavian Convention On Archives: a Case Study in State Succession

Abstract

The dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in 1918 created numerous problems for the successor states, including that of the ownership of archives. The negotiations on this subject between Austria and Yugoslavia, which have been going on since 1920, are summarized as a case study of the problem. Attention is concentrated on the Austro-Yugoslavian Convention of 1923 and on efforts, particularly since World War 11, to implement its provisions.
