China's modernisation programme places great
strains on existing library resources and
personnel, which are also affected by the
growth of foreign literature collections, the ex
pansion of Chinese publishing and the increase
in the educated population. Over 30 university
library science departments offer full-time
courses. The training facilities available in Beij
ing and Shanghai, and the activities of the new
national information college at Wuhan Universi
ty, Hebei Province, are described and the
opportunities for foreign assistance outlined.
