Examines the development of libraries in both colonial and post-independence Malawi. Highlights concerted efforts by the Malawi National Library Service in providing information services to the rural areas, where the majority of the population lives. Considers this along with the recently released Malawi Vision 2020 document. Calls for comprehensive assessment or evaluation of existing information services in rural areas before introducing new information technologies.
