Discusses the reasons for the poor image and low status of the library and information profession in Mauritius. These include: lack of recognition; poor budgets; inertia of the library association; conservative librarians; unattractive salaries; lack of professional staff; sub-standard libraries; and the absence of proper legislation. Suggests means for improvement.
