Abstract
Discusses obstacles to the development of the information sector in Africa, focusing on the situation of African information professionals and professional associations and the need for a new type of information professional in Africa. Outlines the main stages in the development of the Schools of Information Studies in Africa at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, and the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Concludes by outlining the conditions for the creation of a new profile for African information professionals.
