Abstract
Reviews the historical development of library and information education in the Arab states of the Maghreb (al-Maghreb al-Arabi): Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, and Morocco. Reviews training programmes which existed before formal professional education started, the establishment of library schools, the programmes they offer, and the degrees they award. Also briefly describes the facilities of the library schools, such as technical equipment and library collections. The qualifications of the teaching staff are also mentioned.
