Abstract
Paper presented at the annual meeting of the Information Management Working Group of the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI), 6–9 September 2000, Bergen, Norway. Outlines work in progress regarding knowledge management development within the development and relief charity, Oxfam. In the initial stage, knowledge management is being handled as a project. The Project Sponsor is a senior manager and member of the corporate management team. A three-year knowledge management strategy has been developed. The first phase comprises three pilot projects, dealing respectively with: knowledge mapping in emergencies response; assessing the effectiveness of Oxfam programmes on African land rights issues and HIV/AIDS; Knowledge Management for Shop Managers in the Trading Division. Knowledge management has been identified as a core competency for staff within Oxfam. Knowledge management activities will be assessed in individual annual performance reviews.
