Abstract
Considers why privacy and the protection of personal data has become such an issue in the new technological environments, particularly relating to traffic over the Internet. Discusses some of the national and international solutions being proposed, as well as technological solutions being offered by Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Points to specific cases of the abuse of personal information, in Europe, UK, Canada and the USA and the need for the revision of specific privacy laws and the approaches currently taken by these countries. Examines what the impact of the European Directive on Data Protection might mean to countries that trade with European countries and argues strongly the case for international standards. Focuses on the approaches to privacy taken by the USA.
