Abstract
This paper discusses briefly the history of the development of CD-ROM technology, then considers current events within both the electronic publishing industry and the information profession generally. A number of common themes are identified and discussed, and these are used to explore the direction that the information industry is going. The conclusion which is drawn is that the information profession is at a crossroads in its development and needs to change quite radically to survive and prosper into the next century.
