Abstract
A uniform pantographic deployable column consists of identical scissor-like elements placed along a straight line. Structural behaviour of such a column under lateral, moment and axial loads is studied. Assumptions include linearity, sufficiently large number of units in a column and certain restrictions on the degree of deployment. The corresponding deflections for each load are obtained both including and neglecting axial deformations of bars in pantographic units. The overall bending and axial stiffnesses of deployable column are derived by equating its deflections to those of a uniform solid column of the same length. Similarities and differences between the two structures are outlined.
