The paper compares long span lightweight roof structures with passive and active cladding surfaces. The potential of cover surfaces which take part in the gravity load transfer system is shown. An economical study of five roof types with corrugated steel cladding is summarized. The advantage of using ferrocement surfaces is discussed and data from results of tests on a model beam are presented. Some aspects of further research and development are pointed out.
