Abstract
DR. RUSSELL M. KNIGHT IS WITH THE University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada. This paper describes a cross-cultural survey of international venture capitalists to investigate the criteria they use to evaluate venture proposals. The data were taken from a United States survey of venture capital firms and the results are compared and contrasted with the original US responses. The study was done in Canada, Europe and Asia Pacific region and the responses are compared with study differences and similarities between responses from various regions. The similarities are apparent, such as the difference in emphasis on high technology around the world. High technology investments are not nearly as popular with venture capitalists in other parts of the world as in the US and high technology is even viewed as a negative criterion in many countries.
