Abstract
Dr. Wim Verhoeven is a researcher at the Research Institute for Small and Medium- sized Business in Zoetermeer, Netherlands. The paper examines the position of Dutch export industries, especially in manufacturing and wholesale trade. Until now SMEs, particularly in manufacturing, have produced relatively low export achievements, although their position has considerably improved since 1980. Further, the motives, behaviour and circumstances of individual firms are analysed. SMEs have to cope with several problems, such as lack of information, risks, procedures and costs. The paper concludes that if these bottlenecks could be removed, small and medium-sized enterprises could increase their exports considerably.
