An Early Communication Scheme is outlined for clients who have not yet
reached the 'early word' stage of language. Aims include the initial
screening for specific perceptual, sensory, and motor difficulty; assessment
of understanding and communicative competence with emphasis on prag
matic skills; and a comprehensive system for targeting and recording
communication objectives across the curriculum and throughout the day.
Implications for an older client population are discussed.
