Abstract
An Early Communication Scheme is outlined for clients who have not yet reached the 'early word' stage of language. Aims include the initial screening for specific perceptual, sensory, and motor difficulty; assessment of understanding and communicative competence with emphasis on prag matic skills; and a comprehensive system for targeting and recording communication objectives across the curriculum and throughout the day. Implications for an older client population are discussed.
