Abstract
Handwriting is a motor skill. To be efficient, it must be automatic. Writing posture, implement, paper position, and the written trace are inter dependent. Systematic training in both practical matters and letter con struction is essential- a motor pattern, once established, is hard to change. An accurate diagnosis is essential for constructive remediation. Criticism alone leads only to increased tension. Early exposure to the skills needed for handwriting helps develop perception and hand/eye coordination. The early diagnosis of language/motor/perceptual problems should result in extra help and encouragement, not delay, in learning handwriting.
