Abstract
The study analyzed whether higher levels of perceived demands related to social change are associated with a greater risk of an unfulfilled need for an intimate relationship and with lower relationship quality among a sample of 2,523 German adolescents and adults. Results showed that higher levels of perceived demands are associated with a higher probability of having an unfulfilled need for an intimate relationship and with lower relationship quality. Problem-focused coping was associated with higher relationship quality in older respondents (30+ years old) and buffered the effects of demands on relationship quality in younger respondents (16—29 years). Individuals with low levels of problem-focused coping may be vulnerable to negative effects of demands associated with social change.
