Abstract
Ophthalmological research is a sober but often rewarding activity. This article discusses some of the difficulties in assessing the value of research and describes specitic areas in which significant advances have been made. These include the management of congenital cataract, essential blepharospasm, refractive surgery, proliferative vitreo-retinopathy and retinoblastoma. The place of preventive ophthalmology is also considered.
