Abstract
The Braille Authority of the United Kingdom will soon make up its mind about what kind of code re vision to present to the 1987 International Conference on English Literary Braille. The Braille Code could be pruned rigorously of many of its seldom used contractions; tidied up and augmented by adding many new and efficient contractions; or kept as it is with perhaps a better chance of unification with the American standard. Benefits and risks accrue whatever course is taken. Events and trends underlying this most immediate controversy are presented in this article.
