Abstract
The following is an edited version of the SWRAB Annual Lecture given in the Livery Hall, Guildhall, on 14 July 1983. It is an account of the ways in which blindness comes about and the role of the specialist social worker and the ophthalmic surgeon with particular reference to blind registration.
