Abstract
I am severely visually impaired and have been teaching for over 30 years. I am an avid reader and have always loved teaching reading. In 1997 I met Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness, who devised 'Phonographix', a method of teaching reading, and went on the first 'Phonographix' teaching course in the UK. Since then I have been using the method successfully with young braillists, having adapted the materials to fit in with Braille for Infants. I was invited to the Read America Conference in New Orleans in April to give a lecture on this, but this paper is an account of how a visually impaired person was able to savour the attractions of one of the world's most exotic cities, New Orleans. identifying dollar bilis was hazardous since no difference in size of the note was used to signify difference in value.
