Dr. Susan Barter-Dawe, formerly a seconded Probation Officer in HMP Strangeways, now a Lecturer in Social Work at the University of Bath, draws on her experience of the Strangeways disturbances of 1990 to argue that the potentially profound impact of such crises demands careful contingency planning both by probation teams and higher management.
