Mary Anne McFarlane, now an Assistant Chief Probation Officer in Hampshire, describes a research initiative at Parkhurst Prison to assess the basis of quality contact between prisoners and the seconded officers they encounter and draws implications for sustaining and improving practice at a time when the future of this work is under considerable threat.
