Abstract
At a time when increasingly the focus of probation work is upon high tariff offenders and a premium is set on genuine diversion from custody, there is much attraction in using new assessment techniques to identify high risk offenders and to predict more precisely what is 'an alternative to custody'. Bale explains his attempt to refine a risk scale and suggests eight ways of putting it to work.
