The present model of staff evaluations in the Probation Service was introduced at the beginning of this decade. The purpose of this article is to fit the introduction of evaluations into the managerial thinking which was current at that time. How well has our scheme stood the test of time? Does it meet present day Service needs? Upon what criteria should evaluations be based and where should responsibility for them lie?
