Abstract
The link between alcoholism and crime has been repeatedly researched and frequently demonstrated. The statistics are staggering. For instance, in 1976 106,325 people were prosecuted for drunkenness. It is reliably estimated that half of Britain's adult prisoners are in prison either directly or indirectly because of a drink problem. Yet knowing the statistics is one thing and being able to mobilise the appropriate help is quite another. The short article which follows is written by Neville, a voluntary associate with the Surrey Probation Service and a member of Alcoholics Anony mous. He believes that closer cooperation between the Probation Service and AA could be of great benefit to offenders with drink problems.
