The relative content of aliphatic/aromatic hydrocarbons, polar species and asphaltene fractions determines the utility of asphalts and is the basis for the selection of the oxidation conditions for heavy oil fractions (distillation residues). The use of different separation methods leads to different types of asphalt (heavy residue) compositions. Three different separation methods were studied and the asphalt or heavy residue compositions arising from these methods were compared.
