Abstract
The interaction of anionic surfactants with multivalent cations leads to precipitation of the surfactant followed by redissolution of the precipitate. The adsorption of anionic surfactants from aqueous solutions on to various substrates yields adsorption maxima. An investigation has been undertaken to test the contribution of surfactant precipitation/redissolution on the occurrence of these adsorption maxima. A method based on the solids concentration has been developed for the calcite/sodium dodecyl sulphonate system in order to estimate the amount of surfactant precipitated during adsorption.
