A mathematical model for describing adsorption of dilute hydrocarbon solutes from aqueous solutions on energetically heterogeneous activated carbons is developed. It is shown that the commonly observed Freundlich type isotherm can be caused by the adsorbent heterogeneity. Data for adsorption of various hydrocarbon solutes on the CAL activated carbon are analyzed.
