Abstract
Niels Chapman is Headteacher of Whitefield School and Centre in Waltham Forest. This paper is in three parts, a conceptualisation of reflective teaching and practitioner research; an analysis of why a loosely conceived investigation generated developments in staff expertise and curriculum innovation whereas a more rigorous piece of conventional research attracted academic praise and dust; and a debate about whether a headteacher can stay in control of his school without having control over research-led staff development.
