Abstract
This study examines gender differences in economic independence and health status among elderly people in India, using 2017–8 data from the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO). It explores these aspects in relation to factors like residence, age, literacy, marital status and principal activity. The findings show that elderly women are more economically dependent than men, with age, lack of education and widowhood increasing dependency. Married individuals tend to enjoy better health, while higher literacy and economic engagement improve male health. The study calls for revamping social security schemes and implementing female-centric measures to address the gender disparities among India’s elderly.
